THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 2023

EXHIBITORS & WORKS

MIKE WHITE

Principal Exhibition Organiser

ROLLESTON

I’m a landscape and astro-photographer from Rolleston. I love exploring our night skies and natural landscapes through my camera. The landscape is always changing around us yet we seem to take it for granted. Nature itself is constantly sculpting the landscape, while the negative impacts of our own interactions within our environment continue to become increasingly visible.

LINCOLN

Growing up having a father who was a keen amateur photographer, I have always owned a camera and had a keen interest in making images. It was something that I have kept coming back to my whole life. In 2018, I decided I wanted to be more serious with photography and completed a Diploma of Digital Photography with SIT. In 2021, I achieved my Licentiate honours with PSNZ. I love photographing birds, landscapes and...well anything that I find inspiring! My passion is creating artistic composites with images that I have taken.

IAN WALLS

TAI TAPU

By nature, I am an optimist, I see the positive side of things first. Photography is all about seeing things that others may not see. Consequently, my viewpoint will be a positive one. So I make pictures that I enjoy.

For me photography provides a means and a motive to become a better observer of the good, the beautiful and the interesting.

The encaustic technique that I have applied is, for me, a way of implying an extra layer of interpretive meaning to the picture. The viewer can decide what that meaning is to them

PENELOPE MCCAUL

LEESTON

My interest in photography was truly inspired when I moved to South Westland in 2012.

Inspired by the landscape and changeable weather I began to capture what I saw around me.

Photography rapidly became a passion and as my skills grow I increasingly use a variety of photographic and processing techniques to not only show what I see but to attempt to convey the emotion that the scene inspires within me.

Immerse and Connect

Photography for me is a way to connect and immerse.
Immerse into nature and the breathtaking landscape of our beautiful backyard. Being out and
about in nature with the camera is like meditating in a humbling surrounding and where I can find
happiness. Capturing emotions in a photograph is quite a big task and ongoing challenge.

Photography also is about connecting with people. I love photographing people with all their
different personalities and it is a privilege being allowed to capture a special moment or a glimpse
of their personal lives.

REBECCA DORE

SPRINGSTON

I have always loved photography but never knew what all the buttons on my camera were for.

Having moved out to Kirwee with all the amazing sunrises and sunsets and the ever changing country side I was tempted to pick up my camera and give it a go properly. So at the ripe age of 50 I decided to go to night school and learn all about it. Since then I haven't looked back.

I always thought that landscapes were going to be my thing but as I have continued with my photography I have discovered that I like macro photography especially bees and flowers. I love capturing auroras, sunrises and sunsets. Anything to do with nature and colour.

It just makes me happy and I have had the privilege to meet some lovely like minded people on my journey. I look forward as to where it might take me.

GEMMA FLAY-HUGHES

DARFIELD

Originally a wedding photographer from Auckland, I now live in the Selwyn District and photograph mainly families, maternity and newborns, as well as some commercial and branding work. I'm a huge lover of nature, especially flowers, and occasionally release photographic prints to buy that are inspired by these. Never without a camera growing up, I fell naturally into photography as a hobby photographing my own kids, and then a career in 2014 and have been passionate about it ever since.

Photographing families is now a huge love of mine, and my style is authentic, wild and full of loving connection and storytelling. I'm inspired by human to human connection, natures backdrops, epic light, and my own family. Like many photographers I love a good coffee, good movies, and traveling. I'm also a novice surfer, snowboarder and horse rider.

I love experimenting with arts and crafts and find this helps my creativity in my shoots. I also have a huge passion for mental health especially for mothers, and feel strongly about supporting small business particularly when women-led.
